Nourishing bodies, uplifting souls

Mohanji Annakshetra

A simple plate of food becomes a vessel of grace - reminding everyone that kindness still moves the world. Our community kitchen undertakes this sacred seva daily: free, fresh, sattvic meals served round the clock with compassion, dignity and warmth.

Mohanji's vision is simple - let no one sleep hungry. All beings are welcomed: the needy nearby, ashram residents and staff, and visitors. The food we serve is what we ourselves eat, and the grace does not stop at the ashram gates: nutritious meals reach nearby tribal areas, migrant families and those in need. Here, each plate is prasad - compassion in action.

Annadaan is mahadaan - the highest form of charity. Take care of your family, but also do what you can for society, thus reducing the intensity and weight of your own existence, family and lineage.- Mohanji

Gokulam Gaushala
Gokulam Gaushala - a home for rescued cows
A home for our sacred mothers

Gokulam Gaushala

Vedic wisdom, rooted in non-violence, regarded cows as celestial beings. Mohanji set up the Gokulam Gaushala to love, care for and respect them - a home for abandoned, old, rescued and injured cows, where they feel protected and happy.

Our first friends - Shiva the bull, and the mothers Rukmini and Satyabhama with their calves Radha and Madhav - came from around a hundred cows rescued from slaughter by local gauraksha organisations. They no longer fear for their lives; Rukmini has since delivered healthy calves, Ram and Sundari, the first born in our space. With the community's support, we hope to slowly expand this safe haven and rescue many more.

Why are cows considered sacred?

From Mohanji's book, Mast - The Ecstatic

It is said the great sage Vasishtha requested the creator Brahma, on behalf of all the sages on Earth, for a completely sattvic being to help them lead a sattvic life - providing sattvic food, and materials for fire ceremonies and purification. Lord Brahma provided the cow.

We are nourished by its milk and milk products. Its dung and urine - antiseptic and sattvic - are used to clean and purify our homes and places of worship; ghee purifies the offerings for rituals; solidified dung fuels our fire ceremonies, and dung and urine fertilise organic farming.

But Lord Brahma warned: these peaceful, subtle beings cannot protect themselves; in return for its service, humankind must promise to protect the cow. Sage Vasishtha promised on behalf of the sages - and so cows are protected by the tradition in keeping with that promise. Lord Krishna showed the world, by protecting cows, that they must be cared for.

We drink the cow's milk; the cow is like our mother, and we respect our mother. Our association with the cow was meant to be a collaboration. Our scriptures state that the cow's body is the abode of many deities. Those who respect cows are spontaneously sattvic - when we connect to a sattvic being, we become what we are connected to.

Like a tree, sattvic beings such as cows absorb toxins and negative energies from their surroundings yet release only pure, positive materials, purifying the world from the gross to the subtle. The cow stores these negativities and destroys them at death - which is why a cow's meat should never be eaten.
